Learn how to avoid the top 10 mistakes most authors make when setting out to publish a book—ranging from preparing the manuscript through to marketing and selling. There are so many horror stories these days about writer falling victim to scams, shams, and poor providers of publishing services. Unfortunately, we hear them all the time…writers losing all their files, signing away rights to a book or rights to their next manuscript, writers paying thousands of dollars for services that end up being poorly executed or not executed at all. Regardless of the genre a writer is concentrated in, they face the same risks. With so many publishing providers popping up every day how can a writer protect themselves, their work, and their wallet?

APRIL 15 – READY, SET, PUBLISH WORKSHOPS 

  • 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Being a first-time author can be overwhelming. To become a published author, you need to learn to navigate a whole new world. In this workshop, we will focus on helping writers create their manuscripts and avoid editorial mistakes. We will also give you an overview on what to expect when going through the publishing process and how to avoid potential legal liabilities. The day will consist of four topics geared toward educating and helping you write and publish your book! Topics include:

1. WRITING YOUR STORY: Learn some dos and don’ts while writing and editing your books. We will cover pro tips applicable to all genres during the different stages of writing: outlining, drafting, and editing.
2. EDITING BASICS/TOP MISTAKES: Learn the basics behind what an editor is and does, along with the different levels of editing, and the top self-editing mistakes new authors make when editing their manuscripts and how best to avoid them.
3. BOOK PUBLISHING 101/ARE YOU READY TO SELF-PUBLISH?: Learn the basics of book publishing, both traditional and non-traditional, along with the elements needed to begin the process of self-publishing.
4. LEGAL ISSUES/COPYRIGHT BASICS: Learn about potential legal issues/liabilities when writing, what copyright is, when it’s needed, and how best to protect yourself.

Light refreshments will be provided for this session, but lunch is not included. There is a break for one hour during this event for you to have lunch out at one of the local eateries by the museum.
